Aleksandr Georgievich Gulyaev was born in Rubtsovsk in the Altai region. In 1932 he entered Art College in Tashkent and studied under A. Volkhov and M. Kurzin. From 1937-1946 he studied at the Repin Institute in Leningrad, under professor Osmerkin.

In the 1940s and 1950 he concentrated on large genre paintings in oil, but from the later 1950s he made several series of posters on themes of education of workers in general, and work safety in particular.

The artist was active in Leningrad.
