In 1911, living as a political emigre in Liege, he studied privately under F. Marechal, then at the studio of I.P. Pokhitonov. Later he studied at the Saratov Bogoliubov Art School, 1917, then in the Saratov Higher Art Shops, 1918, under A. Savinov.
