Ivan Tsarevich was born in Belorussiya in 1908. He studied art in Sverdlovsk (now Ekaterinburg) in 1925-1928, after that in VKhuTeMas in Moscow, and after graduating he started working as a book illustrator in Moscow.

After serving in WW2, he continued his career in Moscow. He came the head artist of the publishing house Sovetskii Pisatel. 

During his career, he illustrated more than 200 books.

In 1955 he became a member of the Artists' Union.
