Dmitrii Pavlovich Dmitriev was born in Moscow. Right after the war he entered the Surikov Institute in Moscow, where he studied at the graphical department under M. Dobrov and V. Motorin. He specialised in the media of linocut and lithography.
Among his important works are a large series of linocuts about the Civil War, a series of lyrical linocuts depicting the Russian winter, and genre scenes with domestic animals in nature.
A major work of his was the more than a hundred illustrations (linocuts) to the classical Russian tale "The Magic Humpbacked Horse" by Pyotr Ershov (Конек-горбунок).
Dmitrii Pavlovich was married to well-known Moscow artist Galina Dmitrieva.
