In 1918 he graduated from the Stroganov Central Art and Industry College. He was one of the first artists creating the art of the soviet political poster. During the Civil War, he headed the poster studio in Kharkov, was one of the founders of the Baku department of the Satire Windows ROSTA (Russian Telegraph Agency), later – of the Caucasus department.

He lived in Leningrad from 1922. He worked for the Leningrad Puppet Theater, designed set and costumes for other theaters. During the years of the Great Patriotic War he designed postcards and posters for the Fighting Pen art association. N.M. Kochergin gave over 25 years of his life to the illustration of children’s books.
