Sergey Kovanko was born in Lugansk, Ukraine, and studied architecture at the Art Institute of Kharkov. In 1934 he moved to Moscow, where he worked as an illustrator for journals and books. He prepared various artwork for the Soviet Union pavillion at the International Aviation exhibition in Milan 1935. During WW2, he was at the front as an artist, drawing a large number of sketches.
