Aleksandr Kondratiev studied at the Moscow art Institute МХИ 1934-1940 under Bruni and Kravchenko, specialising in book illustrations.
From 1940-1970 he illustrated a large number of books for the publishing houses Detgiz, Molodaya Gvardiya, Prosveschenie, and sovetskii Pisatel, mainly works from the classical Russian literature.
