Boris Markovnikov was born in Moscow. He studied art at the Moscow art school "In Memory of 1905", and in 1983 he became a member of the Artists' Union.
In his early works, he still painted realistic works, but his style became more and more abstract from the mid-1980s. In the 1990s he has worked mainly with three-dimension art, as well as abstract oil painting.
