Serafim Umnov graduated from the 1905 Art School in Moscow.
Before the war he worked at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow doing decorations and stage designs, for example for the performances Decabrists (Декабристы) and The Red Poppy (Красный мак), as well as stage curtains for ceremonies.
