This gouache of Arbat street portrays three generations of people on the foreground of three epochs of Moscow architecture. Arbat street is a true symbol of Moscow, its name being mentioned first in 1493.
The name "Arbat" could come from the Mongol root "gorbat", which at that time meant "hilly ground".
