biography

Vadim Petrovich Volikov was born in Samarkand. He went to the Mukhina art school (ЛВХПУ) in Leningrad in 1949-1955, where he specialised in monumental-decorative arts - mainly working in glass. His first exhibition was in 1956.

Glass arts was considered somehow formalistic in the 1950s and 1960s, and it was difficult to obtain commissions, so he made a living by painting political posters, He prepared some of the most evocative posters of the 1960s and 1970s, including a number of posters about elections, sporting themes, and the Soviet conquering of the cosmos.

He also worked as a book illustrator, amongst his well-known works is"The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway.

In parallel with his graphical art, he worked privately with glass design together with his wife, Svetlana Ryazanova - a famous glass designer of the period.
